Five North East Councils join forces to increase recycling
Waste Aware North East is delighted that it has been successful in winning funding from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to carry out an eight month campaign to increase recycling of aerosols and glass jars (aerosols and hard plastic bottles in Northumberland). With strength in numbers, the benefit of collaborating with Durham, Gateshead, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland Councils and partnering Valpak Limited, makes it possible to extend the reach of this campaign to give residents of those five Council areas the chance to win a share of £10,000 prizes for utilising their existing recycling facilities.
650,000 householders in Durham, Gateshead, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland Council areas now have the chance to be entered into a monthly prize draw which offers prize incentives to local householders who recycle aerosols and glass jars. To be in with a chance of winning a fabulous prize, residents need to register their interest online at www.recycle-more.co.uk/nerewards. They can choose to keep any prize themselves, or nominate a community group of their choice to win the prize.
Once registered, you will receive a pack in the post which will include personalised stickers that are unique to your home address. You should then apply these stickers to your empty glass jars (hard plastic bottles in Northumberland) and / or aerosol cans and then place these in your kerbside recycling bin.
Each month five or more lucky winners will be selected at random. If you have won a prize you will be informed by telephone or email. The winners will also be published on the NERewards website.
The scheme, which will run from 1st December 2011 until July 2012, is being funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Valpak, and has received support from Waste Aware North East and Groundwork North East.
Sue McClellan, coordinating the scheme for Waste Aware North East, said:
“We are delighted to be involved in the NERewards recycling scheme. We are always keen to promote the importance of recycling and are therefore pleased to support an initiative that encourages our local residents to recycle more of their waste packaging.”
“It is understood that many householders are not aware that aerosols can be recycled. It is also believed that many people are probably reluctant to rinse glass jars and recycle them. We hope that this initiative will help to inform people that these items can and should be recycled and that it will encourage residents to continue to recycle these items after the campaign comes to an end.”
